Today with Columbus City schools, I doubled up with a little office time and went to East High School to observe another track meet. East high school is a part of Columbus City Schools, so I’m excited to see how another city school operates compared to the likes of Hamilton Township. In the office, we spent time examining financial reports for the rest of the spring season as well as the beginning of fall season. The football team needs more equipment to be successful and with money being so tight around the city, and Covid being a big part of that, funds are very limited right now. That’s unfortunate because all sports need some upgrades in their respective programs. Hopefully with a few weeks left, I will be able to submit some reports myself. After observing and assisting with reports, I visited Julian Harris, The Dean of Students and sat down with him as he was meeting with a few student-athletes via phone. This is the type of relationship he has with the students. I just wanted to see how the interaction and dialogue was between them. You can see how much respect they have for him, and I want to leave the same everlasting impact myself. I had to drive all the way out East to attend and observe the track meet to see if there were any differences. One difference was the weather elements. I know track meets happen no matter what the weather is excluding thunder, lightning, and tropical storms. Well today it rained during this event and shelter was not an option for any spectators nor teams that were involved. I wish that Covid wasn’t a factor because then you can use the school as shelter, besides having spectators or teams walking to their cars or buses. The rain didn’t stop the show from going on besides being a little soaked and uncomfortable, but that comes with the job and the territory. No matter the location and what school is running these track meets, they are all the same when it comes to structure and execution. The only difference between this particular one, is that East didn’t have too much staff, so you saw a bunch of their athletes helping with setup and takedown. This was still a great event. I think I say it all the time, but all city schools need more funding to have more personnel to help run events.
